Laura Limbourg (*1996) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she studied under Martin Mainer and then under Josef Bolf. In 2020 she won the Critics' Prize for Young Painting. A key inspiration for her work was a trip to Southeast Asia, where she encountered the selling of the human body, child prostitution and sex tourism. She chose to respond to these themes in a light-hearted way, which also relies on a relaxed handwriting and exaggeration. In her paintings, she projects not only experiences from her travels, but also specific personal experiences that can be linked, for example, to her hobby, flying. She has exhibited in several group exhibitions. For example, at The Chemistry Gallery. She has prepared a large solo exhibition in collaboration with Trafo Gallery.
For Laura Limbourg, the tiger motif in her work is a symbol reflecting her experience of visiting Southeast Asia. The colourfulness, together with the primitivized execution, embodies the spirit and essence of Asian countries. At the same time, the design seems to reflect the strong visual tradition of these regions.
The work is part of a limited series of original prints created during the months Laura Limbourg spent in the USA. Thus, the speed at which the USA lives has functioned here as a kind of counterpoint to Laura's Southeast Asian experience.
