New Positions in British Painting (catalogue)
Product detailed description
Catalogue for the exhibition New Positions in British Painting
British painting has undergone a rather dramatic development since the mid-20th century. Themes have varied from brooding and self-deprecating moods, over critiques of pop culture and abstraction, to the condemnation of figurative painting due to the rise of photography and video art. At the turn of the century, painting came back into the spotlight thanks to the internet and programs like Photoshop. Over the last twenty years, themes of social and political events, pandemics, the country's departure from the European Union, as well as calls for tolerance in society and gender issues, have frequently featured in the work of British painters.
"Tom Anholt, Jessie Makinson, Justin Mortimer, David Brian Smith and Caroline Walker are among the most talented, distinctive and influential painters working in Britain today. It seems fitting and timely to have an exhibition dedicated to the different positions and approaches of British figurative painting in the heart of Europe... ', explained the exhibition's curator Jane Neal. She also said that not only did their talent play a role in the selection of the artists, but also that each of them occupies a privileged position in contemporary British painting.
